The Academy of Music was used by Jacob P. Adler for Yiddish theater. Adler played "Shylock" here in Yiddish with an English-speaking cast in 1903 (Merchant of Venice) prior to going to New York. Opening night, May 9, 1903 was attended by the mayor of Philadelphia, judges, a congressman, and other dignitaries.
