A History and Guide, 1881 - 1930. Philadelphia : Jewish Walking Tours, Inc., ©1999. ISBN 0-9669884-0-X "gives group tours. All tours are led personally by Mr. Boonin. The group tours usually start on Spruce Street and include two or three of the immigrant synagogues in the area of Society Hill and Queen Village. The tour also views and discusses the exterior of the buildings of the former Rosenbaum immigrant bank, the Kratchman bathhouse, the Talmud Torah, the Hebrew Literature Society and many more institutions popular with the east European immigrant generation in Philadelphia. The walk is normally two hours, but it can be adjusted to suit each group. Tours can begin or end at the two deli's in the area (i.e., the 4th Street Deli at 4th & Bainbridge or the PhillyDeli on South Street). Mr. Boonin prefers to adjust the amount of walking to suit each individual group. Most groups that have taken the tour over the past eight years (i.e., 1994 to 2002) have been from Philadelphia, the surrounding counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and from cities within a two hour bus ride of Philadelphia. WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT THE TOURS: "This should make Jewish Philadelphia even more enjoyable. I've done the tour with Mr. Boonin; he is one of the best guides I've ever used." Dr. Martin Hart, leader of a Detroit, Michigan area Jewish study group that travels throughout the United States," 1998. In New York's The Jewish Week for December 14, 2001, Gabe Levenson, the travel writer for the paper wrote: " I sallied forth to explore the streets of the former Jewish Quarter guided by Harry D. Boonin, author of "The Jewish Quarter of Philadelphia." "Boonin's is essentially a nostalgia trip, resonating with memories of an era when there was a vigorous Jewish life in the area [Society Hill], before most of today's 200,000-plus Jews had migrated to the suburbs. They come back now and again to reminisce over a hot pastrami sandwich with the likes of once-and-only Jewish mayor Ed Rendell at the 4th Street Deli (traditional, but not kosher), or to nibble Jewish Apple Cake at Roz Bratt's heimishe bakery on South 5th Street [ 510 S. 5th Street]." "Thank you for everything you did for us to make it [the tour] all a wonderful experience." Vicky Cohen, Travel & Trip Chairman, Shalom Club at Lake Ridge, Toms River, New Jersey, October 17, 2002. SPECIAL TOURS Special tours can be arranged for groups or family reunions. Tours can also include a slide lecture, on the same day as the tour or another day. The slide lecture is about one hour and covers the same locale covered by the tour. Please call, fax or e-mail for reservations: Email: harry@boonin.comPhone: (215) 918-0326
